Rehearsal & Performance Etiquette and
Expectations for Musicians
Participation in the Vero Beach Chamber Orchestra is meant to be a musically rewarding and enjoyable experience for ALL members. To that end, we must do our best to respect the conductor, the music, and our fellow musicians at all times by observing these practices:
REHEARSALS
- Be on time. Arrive at the rehearsal site a minimum of 10 minutes prior to the scheduled start. Use that time to set up your instrument and music, warm up, and run through passages you need confidence with.
- Be in your seat ready to go when the conductor steps onto the podium at the scheduled rehearsal start time. Immediately refrain from playing, tuning, and talking when the conductor raises his hand.
- If you are late for rehearsal, remain at the back of the room and set up your instrument/music without disturbing your fellow musicians by moving among those who are playing. Wait until there is a stoppage by the conductor, leave your case in the back, and take your seat quickly.
- When the conductor is speaking to the entire orchestra, or working with a specific section of the ensemble, refrain from talking and playing.
- Watch the time during rehearsal breaks, and be back in your seat ready to go when break is over.
- Listen carefully to announcements by the conductor or orchestra officers at rehearsal breaks and at the end of rehearsal.
- Prior to and following rehearsals, two adults must be in the rehearsal room when student members are present.
PERFORMANCES
- Call time for performances is 30 minutes prior to downbeat. All VBCO musicians are expected to be present at the performance venue at call time.
- Concert attire is “all black” for everyone. Long sleeve shirts/tops. Long pants for men (tuxes/jackets NOT required). Women may wear pants, ankle length skirts, or skirts with black hose.
